The entire plot of the musical revolves around the figure of Don Sylvester and faithful of the country, who will first help their parish priest, then leave him alone and finally be redeemed by his goodness.

To make the musical famous in Italy is the well-known song that gives the title to the whole show: quell 'Add a Seat at the Table that Don Silvestro and all his fellow citizens sing together, while one dove sits on the chair. The Italian voice that is now invariably associated with this song is that of Johnny Dorelli, who for years has supported the role of the priest in charge of the salvation of humanity.
