Ferdinando: Arturo Cirillo stages the text of Annibale Ruccello

Ferdinando is the undisputed masterpiece of the Neapolitan playwright and director, Annibale Ruccello, originally from Castellammare di Stabia and who died early in a car accident in 1986 at the age of 30. The show, taken from the original text, will be staged at the San Ferdinando Theater from the 20 to the 24 in March, directed by Arturo Cirillo, who has already experimented with Ruccello by staging his debut text The five roses of Jennifer.

Il Ferdinando by Ruccello was already on stage in 1986 and toured the theaters of Italy for years, with an unforgettable interpretation of Isa Danieli, who was the inspiring muse and recipient of the text.

Ferdinando Arturo Cirillo Teatro San Ferdinando

The new stage version of Cirillo, sees the participation of the actors Nino Bruno, the same Arturo Cirillo, Monica Piseddu and Sabrina Scuccimarra in the role of Donna Clotilde, who belonged to Isa Danieli.

The story is set after the unification of Italy, after the collapse of the Kingdom of the two Sicilies. Donna Clotilde, a Bourbon baroness, is unable to accept the humiliation of witnessing the social rise of the bourgeoisie, and decides to shut herself up in forced isolation in a Vesuvian villa. The days pass in total boredom, in the company of a poor cousin and conversations with a village parish priest. Only the arrival of Ferdinando, Donna Clotilde's young niece, with a “morbid and creeping” beauty, will change the course of events, exposing long-buried and uncomfortable truths.

To emerge, in this family drama, a "Theater of cruelty disguised as a bourgeois drama", it is not so much the historical context that is just a simple frame, but the feelings of these characters prisoners of their own solitude, the dynamics of their emotional relationships during this forced cloister, their progressive degradation, told in a violent, raw and obsessive . It is Arturo Cirillo himself who conveys the meaning of the drama to us with these words:

Hatred, desires, sexual greed, revenge, overpower, tenderness, abandonment, between four characters, all lost, damned by a different story for everyone, but always inclement and treacherous

A work not to be missed, to get to know one of the most valid and talented exponents of Neapolitan and Italian contemporary theater, whose career was broken too soon ...
