Murat King of Naples on display at the Royal Palace

Two hundred years after the death of Giacchino Murat, an exhibition reminds him of the Royal Palace, including swords, paintings and precious objects

An exhibition to commemorate the French decade in the Kingdom of Naples, the one entitled "Murat King of Naples, at charge step"And which will be set up at Royal Palace from May 19 to 29 September 2015.

The occasion is the bicentenary of the death of Gioacchino Murat, brother-in-law of Napoleon Bonaparte, from whom he was appointed king of Naples in 1806 following the departure of his predecessor Giuseppe Bonaparte to the Spanish throne.

The kingdom of Murat in Naples lasted ten years, until the 1815, when, after the defeat against the Austrians, he tried to reconquer the kingdom, failing. In October he was then sentenced to death and shot by the Bourbon execution squad. Since then, the throne returned to the hands of Ferdinand I of Bourbon.

The exhibition

The exhibition at the Royal Palace of Naples, more precisely in the Salone d'Ercole, puts on display well 150 pieces, largely belonging to collections of French museums, loans made possible by the collaboration with the General Consulate of France in Naples (which curates the exhibition) and with the National Committee for the celebrations of the Bicentenary of the “French Decade.

Among the most interesting objects, we find the curved blade, almost Ottoman-shaped, wielded by Murat during the Egyptian campaign and the Ceremonial sword from Marshal of the Empire. In addition, it will be possible to admire other valuable objects such as miniatures, porcelain, engravings e paintings from the Musée de l'Armée, the Fondation Napoleon in Paris and the Napoleonic Museum in Rome. To enrich the exhibition, explanatory and multimedia panels that allow the visitor to interact on several levels with the exhibition.
