The square
Piazza San Gaetano is located in the heart of the historic center of Naples, near the decumanus major, today via dei Tribunali, and in that same area that was originally intended foragora Greek, then to the Roman forum and, in the Angevin period, to the administrative functions of the sedili and of the parliament.
Its name is due to tomb of San Gaetano kept inside the Basilica of San Paolo Maggiore overlooking the picturesque square, along with the basilica of San Lorenzo Maggiore.
Monuments
Furthermore, one is dedicated to the saint statue placed in the square itself on a marble base of the seventeenth century and which was built in 1664 by Cosimo Fanzago as a vote for the escaped plague epidemic of 1656. The metal statue of the saint is shown intent to turn his arms towards the faithful.
From the square you can explore the underground of the city, through the visit of Underground Naples or of the archaeological excavations of San Lorenzo.
