An exhibition of works that inspired Picasso, especially the figure of Pulcinella, in the Certosa di San Martino in Naples.

On the occasion of the centenary of the visit of Pablo Picasso in Italy, where he also visited Naples, there are many exhibitions and events in his honor in our city. In fact, even in the Certosa di San Martino has been set up a exhibition itinerary dedicated to the Spanish artist, inaugurated the 22 April 2017 and will be permanent.

The Charterhouse was one of the places that most impressed Picasso during his visit to Campania and he visited it with choreographer Leonide Massine, Igor Stravinskij and with the dancer and future wife Olga Chochlov. He has always been very attracted to the popular and classical artistic tradition, typical of Neapolitan art and culture, especially from Pulcinella figure. Precisely for this reason, the Certosa museum wanted to pay tribute to its passions with one detail installation that recalls the works admired and loved by Picasso.

The new room and the set-up

One of the sections that struck him most was "Memories of popular theater“, Created in 1901 in the ancient monks kitchens. In these rooms the true model of the San Carlino Theater scene where the Neapolitan comedy was staged and which was a theater school for many artists, including Antonio Petito, the greatest Pulcinella of the 800th century. It was from Petito Picasso and Massine that they drew inspiration for Stravinsky's ballet Pulcinella. Today a new staging for the Theater Section is proposed with the San Carlino scene and a new room.

In the room are exhibited the works donated by Stelio and Marinetta di Bello and which are inspired by Pulcinella who, as mentioned, was a figure who inspired Picasso so much that he thought of her as opposed to Harlequin. There are also many works that impressed Picasso in the old path including Pulcinella in the world of the Moon, the manuscript scripts by Petito, those by Pasquale Altavilla (who worked with Antonio Petito's father), the theatrical poster by Giuseppe Romito, photos of the Compagnia del San Carlino.

Recall that there are two other exhibitions on Picasso: Parade at the Museum of Capodimonte and Pompeii , exhibition in Cava de 'Tirreni.
