Piazza dei Martiri in Naples

La Piazza

Piazza dei Martiri is one of the most elegant squares in the city and is located near the Riviera of Chiaia and of the Caracciolo seafront.

It dates back to early seventeenth century, a period in which the expansion of the city towards the west was underway.

The square is dedicated to all the Neapolitans fallen for freedom of the Neapolitan city in the 1799, 1820, 1848 and 1860, as well as symbolized from above obelisk which stands in the middle of the esplanade on which a statue that embodies the "virtue of the martyrs" dominates.

The buildings

Among the most important buildings we should mention:

  • il Partanna Palace (restored by Antonio Niccolini for Lucia Migliaccio, wife of Fernando I di Borbone);
  • il Palazzo Calabritto (renovated by Luigi Vanvitelli).
