The eighteenth-century Teatro Mercadante, formerly Teatro del Fondo, hosted the greatest artists of the time, from Gioacchino Rossini a Mozart. Among the countless absolute premieres, in the 1816 the first of theOthello Rossini and in the 1822 the first de The anonymous letter of the Donizetti.

The current name dates back to 1870 when the theater, following restoration work, was dedicated to Saverio Mercadante, Apulian and Neapolitan composer by adoption.

Inside the theater is currently the public institution of theatrical production of the Teatro Stabile, founded in September 2002.
