The church
The Church of San Pietro a Majella, dating back to the fourteenth century, was built by the will of Charles II of Anjou and it was dedicated to Pietro del Morrone, later known as Pope Celestine V.
He underwent several precautions, first at the request of Roberto d'Angiò, then of Alfonso I of Aragon. From the original Gothic features over time it assumed characteristically baroque features, which were later recovered, as is the case with the pointed arches of the ceiling.
The main paintings that adorn it, works by Mattia Preti, are dedicated to Celestino V ea Saint Catherine of Alexandria. They are flanked, among others, by the Stanzione, del Vaccaro and of the Fanzago.
