Via Mezzocannone in Naples

Via Mezzocannone Naples

La strada

Via Mezzocannone is a road connected to Piazzetta Nilo e Piazza San Domenico Maggiore with the underlying Corso Umberto I.

His name is due to one fountain in piperno (in the past dismembered and today almost completely dispersed) placed at about half of its length. It dates back to the XV and was erected by the will of the King of Naples and Duke of Calabria Alfonso II for the purpose of water the horses. Basically, the fountain was equipped with a tube (cannoli o Cannon in Neapolitan) very short (from which mezzo).

Another interpretation would, however, go back to the definition of a unit of measurement of the water capacity of the fountain (cane o Cannon) and the fountain would have had just the scope of half cannon.

To date, via Mezzocannone is the beating heart of the University life Neapolitan, with some offices of the University of Naples 'L'Orientale' and 'Federico II'.
